This is a pottery artefact of a Sogdian on a camel in the Sancai style. Sogdia was an ancient Iranian civilization in present-day Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Sogdians also lived in Imperial China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The Sancai style is a type of decoration on Chinese pottery that uses glazes in three main colours, brown, green and off-white. Just one of the many interesting discoveries I made while visiting the Shanghai Museum.
