Chinese furniture has evolved since 1000 BC independently of Western furniture. There are essentially two main distinct styles of Chinese furniture making: Ming and Qing. Ming style uses the simpleness of shape and the elegance of curves and lines to create a sense of balance and harmony in its design. In addition, Ming furniture is ergonomic and keeps its backrest in the shape of āSā or āCā. The photo above showcases Ming style furniture from the Shanghai Museum. Qing style on the other hand uses thick and heavy materials and its designs are rich and complicated showcasing splendour and wealth.
