These are called the “hard sleepers” in trains in China

Aug 2014. Shenyang.

The normal trains in China are called the Z, T, K and L series trains and the high-speed trains are called the D series trains. For long distance overnight trips, people book the sleeper class. There are three types of sleepers: hard sleeper, soft sleeper and deluxe sleeper. Hard sleeper is the cheapest, soft sleeper is one step higher and come in a private room and deluxe sleeper is your Shangri-La. It was only a two hours ride to Benzi this time and so I didn’t book a sleeper. But I did try the sleepers once from Beijing to Shenyang for work and had a pleasant experience. It was clean, comfortable and safe and I slept like a log.
