Chinese traditional unit of mass with a Malay name: Catty

Sep 2014. Anshan

We are truly a melting pot of culture in Singapore and Malaysia. Whenever I followed my mum to the wet markets in Singapore in the 1970s, the market vendors measured the weight of things in catties. One catty is 604grams. And the catty is actually a Malay word for the traditional Chinese unit of mass, jin. And I thought we were done with that era of measuring things in catties and had moved on to the metrics system. Then in 2009 I moved to China and they were still weighing things in catties, just that they didn’t call it a catty but a jin. Here is a street vendor in Anshan prepping his weighing scale and I am pretty sure its in jins.
