Ballroom swings in a Chinese neighbourhood

Shenyang, 2018

There is a shopping mall near my residential compound in Shenyang and every night, the open spaces around the mall transform into various dancing areas for the neighbourhood. The biggest one was the “line dance” which I had written about in another post.

But there was also another group, a much smaller one, that was organising classical Western dance lessons for Waltz, Cha Cha and other ballroom swings. The leader of the group was a couple who in these photos are wearing all black.

They would dance first and then later teach others one by one. It’s completely free and voluntary to take part. After my work and after my dinner in one of the nearby food places, I would always walk past the shopping mall to go home. And I have always stood there looking at the dance activities outside the mall with wonder and amazement. The leading couple had amazing talent and more importantly the heart to share it with others. And it was beautiful to see normal people coming up to learn something new and doing their best.

In my job as a change manger, the biggest challenge is enabling managers and staff with commitment and ownership, to take up responsibilities to do their part in times of change. But here, no names were asked. No fees were collected. No membership forms were filled up. I am not even sure how this works. But they were dancing away every night.
