Kaya toast is two toasts spread with butter and kaya, a coconut jam. Actually a lot of food that we think are uniquely Singaporean or Malaysian actually had its roots from elsewhere. I only had this paradigm shift when I came to China because I saw so many dishes that looked like the early ancestors of some of my favourite food back home in Singapore like for example mee goreng (fried noodles). Anyways, according to Wiki the kaya toast was invented by the early Hainanese immigrants in Singapore. And teh tarik was invented by early Indian immigrants in Malaysia. I don’t know how many Singaporeans and Malaysian actually know this.
