I have always felt peevish about pet fishes in plastic bags

Shenyang. Jun 2014

After being in China for ten years, I think the laws and the culture to protect pets are still at an early stage. The country has 1.4 billion people to feed and I think caring for pets becomes a distant second priority. I think Beijing is quite pet-friendly as I noted that most of my neighbours had a small dog when I was living there in 2016. In Shenyang, it was a pity to see shops peddling puppies and mittens in small cages. In this night market, a lady is selling pet fishes in plastic bags, which is common and allowed. But I am a pet fish lover and I don’t really like that idea. I think you need to sell fishes in proper tanks with air pumps and filtration.
