A Carrefour Customer Notice with Bad English

Other than some front desk staff at banks, airports, hotels and of course staff at international companies, the vast majority of the Chinese population do not speak or understand English.

However, I have always been absolutely amazed at the government’s efforts to make sure that as many signs are in English as possible around the country.

For example, all the road names are in both Chinese and English around the whole country, even for the smallest lane in the smallest town in China.

In addition, signs in lifts, buses, trains, hospitals, government offices and shopping centres are in English.

However, you have to give some allowances for the mistakes in the English. After all, its not the Chinese’s native tongue. And of course, in some occasions this does give rise to some funny situations.
