The security guard

Shenyang, 2018

You can find security guards practically everywhere in China: airports, hotels, banks, hospitals, supermarkets, business and residential lift lobbies, entrances and gates etc. This is actually a very large industry and work force in China giving jobs to probably hundreds of thousands or millions of older men who otherwise might be jobless.

They are always in some sort of a guard uniform or at least wear a guard shirt. They always have a kettle to boil water for their tea, their cigarette packs, daily newspapers, a small TV and a visitor’s log. Most of the time, they order their food and its always delivered to their security post or table.

The bigger organisations like airports and five star hotels have better dressed security guards and who seem more professional. The smaller outfits, like this small neighbourhood grocery wholesale shop, just hires someone to sit there the whole day to prevent people from trolleying out goods through the back door.
