
I arrived in Shenyang in January 2014, right into one of its coldest winters. It was a terrible experience for me because I came in Shanghai’s winter clothes for zero degrees centigrade ( ). Shenyang was doing something like between -10 and -25 degrees centigrade ( ) and Shanghai’s winter clothes were simply not good enough. Plus you needed proper winter shoes, gloves and head gear and scarves.
My personal wow moment was when I realised that its not how much you wear, its what material you wear. And there were many more moments like this throughout my ten years in China. Hard knocks in life I would not have normally gained if I was sitting in my warm comfort zones in Singapore.
And now looking back, I have absolutely no idea how I made through the Shenyang winter of 2014. I can only say that I am externally grateful for Buddha’s guiding hand and my kind neighbours’ love.
