There are both international hospitals and local government hospitals in the cities that I have lived. The international hospitals had foreigner doctors from USA, UK, Australia etc as well as English-speaking local doctors. However, the international hospitals were small and did not normally have all the medical equipment as in a full-fledged large hospital. Therefore, sometimes you do have to visit the large government hospitals.
Here I am going to talk about the Shenjing Hospital in Shenyang. Shenyang is the capital of the Liaoning Province in China. The Shenjing Hospital had a good reputation so much so that people from other parts of the Province travelled to visit this hospital. It is also one fo the recommended hospitals from my office if I needed to see a doctor in a large hospital. The hospital also offered a “VIP Service” which I have talked about in another write-up.
Normally the inside and outside of the hospitals are quite crowded. The outside of the hospital is busy is in fact a bustling mini-world on its own. There are small food stalls, shops that sell things that you might need for a hospital stay, pedlars advertising hotels for interstate travellers etc.
The inside of the hospital was really huge. There were several adjoining buildings with many floors, lifts, corridors etc all labelled in both Chinese and English. But the English translation might not be clear sometimes. It was crowded at the main lobbies, information and registration counters, waiting rooms, escalators and pharmacies. When you are in China for sometime, you will get used to the fact that this is a big country with many people. But you kind of really feel it in public hospitals, especially a big and famous one like the Shenjing Hosital.
