Mahjong. One of those things that you cannot not talk about, if you are talking about China. I was born in Singapore and pretty much lived my whole life there. As you know, Singapore has a predominant Chinese population. When I was young, we were living in a third floor apartment in a ten-storey flat and sometimes I could hear the sounds of clashing mahjong tiles the whole night. The Singaporean Chinese have some cultural traditions in Singapore. For example, during some festive seasons they have late night parties entertaining guests and celebrating. And the other tradition is the funeral wake. Staying awake the whole night during a funeral. Most of the times, the funeral is held at the void deck area of the flat, the bottom floor of the building. So when I was young, I heard mahjong sounds sometimes from above and sometimes from below. Anyways, this is not the first time I am going to be talking about mahjong in this blog. So for now, here’s a group of gentlemen enjoying the game under a tree in the French Concession Area.
