Hongshan Forest Zoo – Where the Animals Roamed Free

Nanjing. Jan 2012

The zoological park was huge with seperate open areas for tigers, lions, monkeys, bears etc. We took the zoo’s cart tours and also walked to see some of the attractions. I have been to many zoos before: Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia. But this was the first time that I saw zoo animals in a snow environment. I wondered how they coped in this cold weather. The monkeys seemed quite busy in their social circles but the tigers and lions seemed quite restless, pacing up and down, particularly the tigers. I also saw some pictures of the tigers in a circus setting but I wasn’t quite clear what was the connection. Were the circus tigers kept here or were retiring here?
