Here Rests the Father of Modern China

Nanjing. Jan 2012

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen is considered the “Father of Modern China” both in mainland China and in Taiwan, according to Wiki. He fought against the imperial Qing government, founded the Republic of China and became its first President in 1912. His mausoleum is situated at the foot of the Purple Mountain in Nanjing. When I visited it while in Nanjing, I found an inscription (see below) that said that Dr. Sun established the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924. Actually there is a residential suburb in Singapore called Whampoa. All my life I thought that it was a local Singapore name. Only in Nanjing diod I realise that it was named after the Huangpu district in Guangzhou, the capital city of the Guangdong province in China. “Whampoa” is an alternate romanized version of “Huangpu”. Sometimes the further away you are from your birthplace, the more you learn about it.
