
One of the things that fascinated me when I first moved to Shanghai was its unique blend of old-world colonial charm and orientalism called Haipai. You can see it in the streets and buildings, in the arts, book, film and theatre scenes and also in some bars, cafes and restaurants. Here is an example from a dinner place from 2011. Bold red walls decorated with vintage photos showcasing Shikumen architecture. Elaborate timber wall panellings matched with the simplicity of a red lamp.
