The Mother River of Shanghai, Huangpu

Shanghai. Aug 2013

The Huangpu River (“Yellow Bank River”) is regarded as the Mother River of Shanghai as it gives drinking water and is key for the city’s shipping, drainage, fishery and tourism. It is 400 meters (1,312 ft) wide, 9 meters (30 ft) deep, runs across 10 districts and divides Shanghai into Pudong (East Bank) and Puxi (West Bank). For 5 years, I saw it from above, crossed it on bridges and tunnels and rode on it countless number of times. But I never knew it was man-made: A Lord Chunshen built it around 475 BC – 221 BC.
