A Ming vase is like poetry in porcelain

Shanghai. Aug 2013

The Chinese have a long history in pottery and ceramics. They invented porcelain and so much so that we call it “china” interchangeably in everyday conversations. In old China, ceramics were made for the government, for the rich, for some popular Chinese markets, for export and for special uses such as tombs and altars. A cross section of these ceramic uses is displayed in the Shanghai Museum. More than 500 masterpieces of pottery and porcelain have been displayed in 1,300 sqm (14,000 sq ft) of space. I am personally attracted to blue and white Ming style vases and have a large and heavy table lamp in this style in my house today.
