We used the Hongqiao and Pudong Airports when living in Shanghai. The Hongqiao airport is 10 minutes away from my house and is for domestic flights, Taiwan and Hong Kong. For all other international flights, you need to go to the Pudong Airport. I dreaded going to the Pudong Airport because it was 1.5 hours away and cost about 200 rmb taxi fare. Its also more massive than the Hongqiao Airport and can be super crowded at times. You can go to the Pudong Airport using the Metro but it is a hassle if you are travelling with your family and have many luggages to carry. But end of the day, you have to do what you have to do.
