Many parts of ancient Chinese buildings have been reconstructed over the years

Shenyang. May 2014

My German colleagues were there first ones to point this out to me: that a large part of many of the old buildings in China were reconstructed over the years. They were speaking from their experiences as many of their own old buildings were destroyed during the World War II bombings and were rebuilt over time. So I think it is a good idea to ask yourself or to read the tourist information so that you know which part of historical sites are newly built and which parts are original. Here, the construction workers are building new pavements in the Imperial Shenyang Palace. At least you know now that these parts of the Palace are not ancient.
