A lone coke vending machine stands in one of the 300 buildings in the Shenyang Imperial Palace. A lesser-known palace built in 1625 for the later Jin and early Qing emperors. Personally, I don’t think it is a good idea to put a vending machine into a UNESCO-listed heritage site but here it is. But I took this picture for another reason. It’s a metaphor for all the foreign powers who sought to establish a beneficial relationship with China in ancient times and today. Sometimes mutually beneficial and sometimes not.
