What I grew up calling kochi is actually Kui Hua Zi

Sep 2014. Anshan

Since I was a small boy in Singapore, I could never eat the kochi. I put one in mouth, I twist and turn it, lick and suck it and all that was coming out was my saliva and not the sunflower kernel. You need to hold the hull vertically between your upper and lower front teeth and crack it open and then use your tongue’s tip to lick out the seed from the hull. Of course its easier said than done. I finally learned the technique when I was forty years when I came to China. Its a great healthy snack when watching movies. But I did actually feel a little cheated when I found out that it was actually called Kui Hua Zi and not kochi as we did in Singapore.
