Sheshan Basilica, the Catholic Church on a Hill

Shanghai. Oct 2014

When I was in Sheshan, I visited the Sheshan Basilica, a Catholic Church high on the hill with a history dating back to 1863. It is a beautiful church with high ceilings and stained windows, wonderfully built and well maintained. At that time I didn’t know but apparently this is quite a famous Catholic church in China. According to Wiki, Catholics from all over China make an annual pilgrimage to this church every May.

I have been to many Buddhist temples during my 10 years in China but only to 3 churches:

  • Sheshan Basilica. Shanghai. Featured here. Once.
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral. Shenyang. Several times. I will write about this church next time.
  • Saint Sophia Cathedral. Harbin. Once.

Only the first two churches are still currently being used for worship as the last one has been converted to the “Harbin Architectural Art Gallery”. Though I am not a Christian, I do always kneel down and pray whenever I go to church. Its always a beautiful feeling.
