It is a common practice in China for land developers to give farmers a few apartments each when they sell their land to them, in addition to the purchase price. The apartment I was moving into was one those free apartments that my landlord, an ex-farmer had received. It was new but small apartment, with a standard bedroom, a tiny hall, a kitchen and a shower. I was horrified with the kitchen but I don’t think the landlord was going to do anything about it. I asked the landlord for a fridge, asked him to replace the washing machine which was dirty and I started preparing to move in with some reluctance. Something was simply not feeling right.
