Japanese Takoyaki Octopus Balls in China

Shanghai. Oct 2011

The other food I bought for my family while in the Yuyuan Garden was a Japanese snack called Takoyaki. It is a round wheat flour-based batter cooked in a special moulded pan filled with minced octopus and served with a special sauce, mayonnaise and sprinkled with green laver shavings. Of course I didn’t know all these at that time. I just found out today. I didn’t even know that it was a Japanese snack. I thought it was a standard Chinese street food. I was a pretty ignorant at that time. Just buy-eat-and-move-on kind of person. I am still like this now but I pay a little bit more attention to the food, what’s the background, how is it made, what are the ingredients etc. I guess I am more food or cooking-conscious now since I started cooking more seriously after coming to Australia. Anyways, this Japanese snack is also famous in Taiwan. Maybe the snack found its way from Taiwan or Japan but its quite popular in China and you can easily find it in practically in every tourist destination and local night market.
