Coffee Vs 4,000 Years of Tea Drinking Culture

Shanghai. Oct 2011

Right in the main street in the Yuyuan Gardens was Starbucks. I was surprised to see it in this very Chinese cultural heritage area. It almost seemed like a metaphor for Western coffee wrestling its way into 4,000 years of Chinese tea-drinking culture. I really don’t know how many Chinese people visited the store but I think its a great idea because a lot of international travelers visit the Yuyuan Gardens everyday. I know Europeans and Australians might not like Starbucks coffee very much, but I think it is a welcome sign for most foreigners. Read about Starbucks in Shenyang here.
