Round metal coins with a hole in the centre were first introduced in China in 350 BCE. People would string-up the coins using the hole to create higher denominations to pay salaries, taxes and fines. I was lucky to see some of these ancient coins at the Shanghai Museum. The museum houses more than 3,000 pieces of ancient Chinese coins and paper money. In addition, there was also a special section focusing on the currencies used in the ancient Silk Road. And I think you wouldn’t believe it, but there is actually a building in Shenyang that looks exactly like an ancient Chinese coin.
