
I had it in Shanghai, Shenyang and Beijing. But I had it the most in Shenyang: Shaokao, the street barbecue food of China. Some street stalls are large with a bigger display of menu options while others are confined to a box-like stall on wheels. Whatever the scale of their set-up, they all offered stunning barbecue food at street prices. During my five years in Shenyang, I had shaokao thousands of times. In the last four years after leaving China, I have had it once in Melbourne. I do think about it. It does hurt me. But sometimes you simply have to carry on with the change life brings you. Shaokao for now is confined to my memories.
