Singapore was a Malaysian state until 1965 when Singapore become independent and therefore both countries share a common past and culture. In both countries, night markets are called “Pasar Malam” in Malay. One of my earliest childhood memories is my mum bringing me and my brothers to the “Pasar Malam” in Singapore in the late 1970s. All the time, I believed “Pasar Malam” was a Singaporean or a Malaysian thing. And then I came to the China and saw it’s night markets and felt immediately transported to 1970’s Singapore. It well may be that the Chinese brought the night markets to old Singapore, Malaysia and even Indonesia.
