More than a roof over your head

Aug 2014. Shenyang

I am not an expert on traditional roof architecture of ancient China but I love to stand at a distance and gaze at them before walking into a building. Apparently you can guess the dynasty in which a building was made in, just by looking at the roof as they have cultural connotations. And they can be more complicated than I thought. For example, there are many options in terms of the shape and type of the roofs, slopes, ridges etc. The roof can be flat or have one, two or four slopes. It can be three-cornered, four-cornered, six cornered or eight-cornered etc. Wikipedia even has a dedicated page called “traditional Chinese roofing”.
