For the Manchurians, Shenyang seemed like a suitable base to prepare for the conquest of all China. In 1625, Nurhaci, also known as Emperor Taizu, decided to set-up his capital in Shenyang and started the construction of the Shenyang Imperial Palace, also known as the Mukden Palace. The main structure was built in 1625 and was finished in 1636 by his son and successor Abahai, also known as Emperor Taizong. Together they founded the largest imperial dynasty in the history of China: The Qing Dynasty. Today this retired palace sits quietly in the centre of Shenyang as the industrial city outside pumps away busily day-after-day.
