Stinky Tofu II

Shenyang, 2017

This is one of those things you need an “acquired taste”, else you won’t make it. It’s horribly smelly and if it can get past your nose and into your mouth, its absolutely heavenly. This dish is called “Stinky Tofu” but I normally call it “smelly tofu” and you can always find it at night markets or food streets everywhere in China.

It’s basically deep fried fermented tofu served with condiments and a spicy chilly sauce. They are not sold in restaurants and can only be found in small food stalls. The neighbourhood sets-up a night market every evening outside my compound stretching for couple of kilometres and there is often a stall there selling stinky tofu.
