Chairman Mao’s statue was part of a monument which had a large base with many sculptures of peasants, workers and soldiers telling the stories of China’s cultural revolution. The monument itself was situated in a large circle in the middle of a busy downtown road junction. It contrasted well against the backdrop of Shenyang’s night city sky with its neon-lighted office buildings. There were large open spaces around the monument and people used it for their daily exercises and dances. If Chairman Mao was alive, he would be happy to see that the country he helped to build is doing well today, compared to before his time.
